Summary

The once unbeatable Band of the Hawk is smashed, and their former leader, Griffith, has made an unholy pact with the demon lords of the Godhand, sacrificing his former troops to resurrect his crippled body and ascend to stand in power beside these profane gods。 The Invocation of Doom has unleashed a plague of unspeakable horrors upon the earth, and the first battle not only shatters the Hawks, but the hand of their champion, Guts, and the mind of their captain and Guts' lover, Casca。 And while time may heal some of Guts' wounds, it will not heal his desire for vengeance。 And his discovery of a gigantic, dragon-slaying sword might be just the ticket to deal out some king-sized payback!

Also included in this volume: "Berserk Prototype," the very first Berserk story, created during Kentaro Miura's college days as his audition that sold the series!

This is a drastic changing point for the series。 I consider this next phase both good and bad。 Some amazing events happen later, but we also get introduced to Puck and Isidro as main players in the story。 So 。 。 。 yeah 。 。 。 Golden Age has a leg up on those two utter abominations。

Things get very intense and bloody。This book isn’t too predictable。There’s some pretty good comic relief。 The character Puck is actually very humorous and I know some may not care for it but I actually like having a bit of comic relief in a series as completely fucked up as this。 I would also add that the way Miura makes it work is amazing! So this series is not just fantasy but also horror and holy shit, does this volume deliver great horror stuff。 If you like tons of gore, vicious flesh eating elves and grotesque demon monsters you should be satisfied with the contents of this volume。This volume is quite emotional at times。 I’m confused how anyone can read this and only see it as “that edgy rape manga with the piles of blood” because while this series as a whole definitely includes lots of blood and several rape scenes it is also one of the most emotional pieces of storytelling I have witnessed in comics。The ending makes me excited for the next volume。There’s a little bonus that shows the story Miura made as a pitch for Berserk。 While a bit different from the main series it was cool to see。Overall:Berserk is fucking amazing! If you don’t mind graphic content (of any kind I should warn!) and like fantasy and/or horror but haven’t tried this series。。。 what the hell are you doing? You are seriously missing out! This is an incredible piece of storytelling that is always dark, interesting and intense! I’m 14 volumes deep into this and haven’t given a single volume less than 4-stars so that is a sign of quality I’d say!5/5 。。。more

(this is a review for the entire conviction arc)maybe it’s because it just came off the heels of the golden age arc, or maybe it’s because not a lot REALLY happened, but conviction felt lackluster in every way that the golden age arc felt amazing。because the relationship between guts and griffith— or guts and anyone for that matter— wasn’t present, guts as a character felt far less refined than before。 we saw him with puck the whole time, and when he met farnese we got insight into his idea of r (this is a review for the entire conviction arc)maybe it’s because it just came off the heels of the golden age arc, or maybe it’s because not a lot REALLY happened, but conviction felt lackluster in every way that the golden age arc felt amazing。because the relationship between guts and griffith— or guts and anyone for that matter— wasn’t present, guts as a character felt far less refined than before。 we saw him with puck the whole time, and when he met farnese we got insight into his idea of reality of people, for lack of a better term, but otherwise, he was still very angry, very strong, and very determined。farnese was a decent addition to the story overall, and allowed miura to explore some religious commentary and topics, so she served as a good tool。 we’ll see how her character develops from here。 。。。more

After events from the Eclipse this volume brings us to a more slower pace。 Guts learns about the mark and what awaits him and Casca in the future。 So we follow how Guts emerges as a Black Swordsman and starts his revenge crusade。 Finally we witness how Guts obtained that metal slab that looks like a sword if looked at from about half a mile away (and what a story it is!)。Recommended to all fans of horror, gritty and bloody fantasy stories。

The first volume that takes place entirely after the Band of the Hawk story arc, this one is packed with action, gore, and tension。 Highly recommend!

Ah, the end of the Golden Age and the beginning of the Age of Darkness, this is where the horror elements of Berserk are dialed up to the absolute extreme。 You thought the story was gruesome and horrifying before? This seems like it’s picking up again now that it’s going back to episodic demon-hunting adventures。 Puck is at least comically annoying this time。

This is my review of Berserk’s Golden Age Arc contained in volumes 4 through 14。tI can’t say much more about the Golden Age Arc that hasn’t already been said。 I first experienced the arc when I watched the ’97 anime, but the breadth of the story lies within the manga’s pages。 Sure there’s the brutal fighting that I’m sure many action fans read Berserk for, but its spaced out between some say much more about the Golden Age Arc that hasn’t already been said。 I first experienced the arc when I watched the ’97 anime, but the breadth of the story lies within the manga’s pages。 Sure there’s the brutal fighting that I’m sure many action fans read Berserk for, but its spaced out between some really stunning character setup and development of protagonists, antagonists, side characters and their human desire to go somewhere or indulge in their sometimes extremely dark indulgences。 Looking at you King of Midland and Wyald。 Throughout this arc Miura creates a story that’s brutally illustrated by dark glory and quiet existentialism, and there’s plenty of reasons it remains the most iconic arc in Berserk and manga as a genre。tThe scope of many fantasy stories generally keeps me away from the genre。 Sure I love Tolkien and some light dragon fighting or necromancy every now and again, but the entertaining magic and swordplay of the genre often feels like there’s much weight to the consequences。 Berserk’s setting of the kingdom of Midland feels generic, as there’s not much of a sense of why Miura’s battles are being fought。 However the rest of the story is a mold breaker that cuts through the spectacle of fantasy tropes and balances story and substance with violence, gore, demonic pacts and existential conquests。 The lack of worldbuilding sinks into the background when the plot develops through moral choices led by traumatized and purpose-seeking cast。The relationship triangle of Griffith, Guts and Casca is such a beautiful and complex story in and of itself, and I’m really happy that it’s the focus of the writing during the arc。 The icing on the cake is how Pippin, Corkus, and Judeau comment on their personal stake in the Hawks’ fate cradled in Griffith’s sinister dream。 Griffith getting his own kingdom is fulfilled in the most fucked up way possible, and you feel the full moral weight come crashing down on you and the entire cast alike。 When the trio dissolves, its heartbreaking to see Guts realize that Casca’s change may never warrant the same emotional fulfillment they once found in each other。tIf there’s something that’s consistently annoyed me with Berserk it’s the setup and buildup of minor villains, many of whom suffer the same fate as Bazuso in the very beginning。 Guts kicks so much ass and that’s fantastic, but as a reader knowing there’s 39 volumes out there, the danger he’s put in starts to wear thin。 There’s greater and greater foes that Guts has to kill but he succeeds in the same way every time, with the stands full of adoring fans watching every time。 The fighting takes up a lot of the manga and the payoff satisfaction comes from the characters pursuing or realizing their dreams。 But the process of getting there feels very similar and bland, whether Guts is storming a castle or killing literally a hundred pursuers。 The psychological effects of those encounters affects everyone but knowing Guts will just blow through the fights and come out on top has felt tedious at times。tIf you have a disposition where you can read sordid things, I cannot recommend this arc enough。 Miura depicts gruesome torture, violent dismemberment, murder and abuse of children, and graphic sexual assault throughout Berserk, so I don’t recommend it if any of those things strongly affect you。 They all play into the story, and with the rapey exception of Wyald’s gross tongue, aren’t just for edgy shock value。 Most of the time the sordid stuff is shown to have dire psychological consequences on Berserk’s characters。 That being said, I’d recommend passing if you’re like me and your mental illness amplifies the impact of media you consume。tI’m keeping in mind some of the Berserk universe’s rules for future arcs。 I’m always skeptical of using fate as a theme, because it often seems both bleak and makes the characters actions feel hollow。 I speculate that Skull Knight’s explanation of the Godhand’s rule of fate will be tested by our grumpy Struggler throughout the series。 Because of Berserk’s writing quality so far I could see some interesting payoff with how that ruling of fate will pay off。 I’m also eager to see how Skull Knight, Zodd, and the Godhand’s backstories will all play into each other, as a webbing of their relationships has been hinted at。For those willing to plunge into the dark side of human fulfillment, I highly recommend this manga。 Berserk blends fantasy and horror with a unique art style and focused story for a satisfying read。 Miura sets out to write characters and have their motivations and desires tested by demons, glory and war。 It’s a pretty straightforward formula that’s been copied and rewritten in less interesting ways。 Miura’s also a hell of an artist with a particular eye for monster body horror and the macabre。 For fourteen volumes he’s balanced brutally detailed violence and tender introspection, and I hope it continues to work during the rest of the series。 。。。more
